Because being outside isn’t cancelled…

Backyard entertaining is the new “going out.” With COVID-19 still very prevalent, a guide to small socially distant soirees or dining al fresco seems to be in order. From the best summer backyard drinks to simple appetizers and casual fashion outfits
….here are just some ideas.
BARTENDING
If you’re tired of drinking rosé for these past couple months and want to try something new, try these options…
CHEFFING
For food to serve, think one-bite appetizers that can be served on a platter or separate plates and easily scooped up with a toothpick. I would stay away from communal cheese/charcuterie boards and the chips and dips (hands in bowl and the irresistible double dip are two COVID-19 unfriendly possibilities). Here are some easy appetizers to try: (click images to see full recipe)
Figs Stuffed with Goat Cheese
Simple, creamy, and fresh all in one bite.
Stuffed Endive with Pear Walnut and Goat Cheese
Refreshing, acidic, and gluten-free option.
Easy Pull-Apart Mini Pigs-in-a-Blanket
That salty, buttery goodness, yum.
Mini Cucumber + Smoked Salmon Bites
A double whammy: fast and pretty.
Steak Bites
A crunchy, yet meaty bite— perfect for starting a dinner with friends.
If you have your whole family over for dinner and just can’t do one more barbecue… I’d suggest a one-dish meal such as a kitchen clambake or giant paella (this can be done vegetarian style as well). Simply buy some delicious, warm bread to go with your entree and maybe toss up a salad— you’re good to go!
Kitchen Clambake
In the time of Corona, pair this dish with a Corona beer topped with a lime.
Seafood Paella
So many delicious variations you can try: perfect for either meat and fish eaters.
If you want to make a special summer salad, make this: chopped romaine, small can mandarin oranges, sliced strawberries (l like the circle slices), purple onions, toasted sliced almonds and a 50/50 mix of poppy seed and Italian dressing.
STYLING
And now …. what to wear to a backyard dinner, social distance soiree, family get together or date night with your significant other? I suggest being a bit more casual than if you were going out. It can be super hot and humid, so I would stay away from jeans or pants. Instead, try some skirts, super easy casual dresses or even longer shorts. Another consideration would be your shoes, in case you are on grass or even walking across grass, where I would stay away from heels of any type but certainly thin or high heels. If sneakers or flat sandals aren’t going to give you the lift you need, try “flatforms (flat platforms)” or wedges. Below are a number of backyard looks that have been my go-to’s this summer. I added a summer cotton cardigan as an option in case the temperature drops in the evening (in drier LA type climates, this is a must!). You can also throw a denim shirt or jacket in your car for an evening layer. Stay safe, stay cool and stay smiling even if you are behind a mask… people can see it in your eyes (in my case, in my eye wrinkles)!
