The Fashionable Celeb Awards Go To:
The Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, Grammy and MET Gala red carpets are oftentimes more exciting than the seasonal designer runway shows because who doesn’t love some celeb star power and some style competition? I’m here for it. As with almost everything in 2020, the Emmy awards were done primarily virtual— with over 100 camera set ups worldwide and no real red carpet, (unless you count a red couch with an actor/actress on it dressed from the waist up only). As I watched the E! Live From the Red Carpet coverage, I was really disappointed. But, I will have to give credit here to Regina King, who changed her mind at the last minute for a bold look that spoke the ultimate, powerful fashion statement. She pre-filmed her glam shots in her original dress choice (designed by Schiaparelli) that she would’ve worn and eventually opted for an incredible fuchsia suit (also designed by Schiaparelli) layered over a Brianna Taylor t-shirt (designed by Phenomenal Woman). She didn’t need to flaunt it because the strong visual and message was everything.
Let’s talk about….
Zendaya!
From her 2019 Vera Wang green sheer corset dress to her 2020 “at home” custom Armani Prive look #2 of the evening (worn when she became the youngest woman to win “Best Lead Actress” in a drama), she is clearly continuously having a fashion moment. I loved the festive polka-dot skirt paired with the fitted beaded top (just the right amount of fun and sexy) and Bvlgari jewels. I’m sure some would have chosen her first look by Christopher John Rogers, which she wore for a live appearance with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the awards show but… while perfectly styled with sleek hair and amazingly paired jewelry, for me, it was the polka dot look that is my top choice. Had I been nominated as an award winner— that would have been my look LOL (paired with her body!). And, even her after party dress from 2019 was a winner!
Zendaya’s “image architect” Law Roach deserves kudos for collaborating on these jaw dropping looks and has been working with her since her time at Disney. See more on their relationship here.
Let’s go back in time…
Here are some other favorites from the last few years, some perfectly styled stars and accessories that stand out.
In 2018, it was Kerri Russell’s memorable Zuhair Murad ensemble that was paired with incredibly sexy shoes and super smokey eyes. The plunging neckline and high-leg slit was sexy while still being very tasteful and balanced with the long sleeves and a mix of textures. Perfection.
Jessica Biel:
For styling, I really like it when the makeup and hair suits the dress perfectly. In 2017 and 2018, Jessica Biel really had this covered. With flowing elegance, in 2017, she gracefully pulled off a plunging neckline and a partial up-do and the next year she wore a super light, airy dress that was paired with loosely-waved hair and soft makeup. Both dresses were Ralph and Russo.
2016 Highlights:
In 2016, I LOVED Kristen Bell’s Zuhair Murad floral gown with her dewy makeup and softly tousled hair. This all works so well together and this floral gown is a showstopper.
Another 2016 favorite is Abigail Spencer in Jenny Packham. I like the navy color and the simple shape, but with small surprises like the sheer polka dot plunge and ruffles.
Some other notable looks were:
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in a great pin-stripe Louis Vuitton AT HOME (styled top to bottom) in 2020.
Laverne Cox’s custom Edie Parker clutch in 2019.
Kerry Washington pregnant in a cutout Brandon Maxwell dress in 2016.
Jane Fonda showing she totally still has it in 2017.
Halston Sage’s Zac Posen in 2017, which was spectacular from the back and when she moved and styled perfectly with sleek hair and jeweled bag.
On my favorite color:
And ….. I love yellow, so here are some over the years.
Lastly—
Sometimes less is more, simple but cool.
