How to wear long and short shorts:
One style trend that moves up and down similar to skirt length is shorts. Last year, bicycle shorts were the it-trend while other years shorts were mini-length! Leading up to COVID-19, spring style trends were predicting “shorts as the new pants.” Instead of one short length or style, the runways showed short suiting, long culotte shorts, and paper bag high waist shorts hitting mid thigh. I decided to try out these different short lengths to see if I could come up with helpful style tips for your next family dinner at home or your first dinner out. I think what is most important is the proportion and balance. I also chose all black “leather” shorts for two reasons - first because spring leather is another trend this year and I would really like to limit my trendy purchases. And because it would be like a science experiment (eliminating other variables - now this counts as homeschool for adult women!). For long shorts, which I’ll call a culotte, I would style with low-heeled shoes like flats or sneakers. In my “experiment,” I really liked the platform thick-soled sneakers and clogs best. I did push out of my comfort zone with white booties for a more fashion forward look. For tops, over the longest shorts, I liked a half-tucked boho sleeveless blouse or a graphic print tee. For high-waisted paper bag shorts, I think you need to tuck or at least half tuck to highlight the pleated details and waist tie belt. A bodysuit or fitted tank looks great with a high paper bag waist, but if you want more coverage the half tuck is a great option (we are in the midst of a pandemic after all!). This mid thigh length worked best with flats or a heeled mule. For short shorts, I think you can go with a high heel or a sneaker depending how tall you are or where you are headed; but stick with a looser top or chunky spring sweater. It is ideal to elongate your legs when you are showing them off— so typically a higher heel works better as your shorts get shorter. For your spring leather purchases, shorts and more, there are many vegan leathers or “pleather” options and you can mix them with your tees, silks, flats and heels for all variations of high-low dressing. Don’t be afraid of shorts this year because, like skirts, there is a good length for everyone.
